Sam Kerr

With the 2027 Women’s World Cup now peeking over the horizon, Australia’s 4-2 loss to a young, regenerating Germany side in Karlsruhe is the latest indication of how much work the Matildas have to do if they hope to compete at next year’s tournament in Brazil

Australian striker Sam Kerr has signed with Gotham FC, the reigning champions of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States, the club announced after the iconic player ended her dazzling career with Chelsea, which saw her win five Women’s Super League titles

Chelsea scored twice more to make their win safe regardless, as Ellie Carpenter poked in for 3-1 before Erin Cuthbert drove in a low finish late on, greatly strengthening Chelsea’s hopes of Champions League qualification on a day when their rivals Manchester United dropped points in a 0-0 draw at Tottenham

Sam Kerr’s 75th international goal may have been her softest as she sent her Matildas on the way to a surprisingly tough and controversial 2-0 victory over Kenya in the FIFA Series final in Nairobi

It has been less than three weeks since Australia’s shattering 1-0 loss to the Nadeshiko, which left senior players like Kerr in disbelief after they produced their best performance of the tournament, only to fall agonisingly short once again

The two Arsenal additions provided the structure and steadiness that had been missing from the Matildas’ messy 2-1 win over North Korea last week, with Cooney-Cross’s ground coverage allowing an inspired Katrina Gorry to push further forward, regularly break through China’s lines, and win free kicks around the penalty area

But while the style was in stark contrast to the defend-to-the-death quarter-final smash-and-grab against North Korea — praised by the coach as “tournament football” — he was less convinced by what he’d seen at Optus Stadium

Also in the last eight, title favorites Japan will be expected to make light work of the Philippines while South Korea meets Uzbekistan

A road needing less travel was temporarily within the Matildas’ grasp before they limply let a half-time lead slip and then needed Kennedy’s last-gasp goal just to snatch a 3-3 draw
