Democratic candidates rally voters as CA governor's race enters final stretch ahead of primary
Supporters of former California Attorney General and U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra gathered Saturday at Manny's in San Francisco, where the Democratic frontrunner struck an optimistic tone
The only people I'm working for are working Californians,
A vote for me is a vote for the common-sense, pragmatic change the California Democratic Party needs,
I have concrete plans to bring down costs, like eliminating taxes for Californians earning less than $100,000,
Simply because there are so many people on the ballot -- and none are superstars,
At the end of the day, we're going to win, because we did it with family,
I treat every race like an underdog-I've had to treat my life like an underdog,

New CA gov poll shows tight race; Democrats Becerra, Steyer could advance
They're very close to one another in preferences, but they've certainly separated themselves from the rest of the field,
Now, we can kind of see with some clarity that it's going to be Becerra, Hilton and Steyer, and two of them will advance to the general election,
The poll results are about what I expected,
I don't have a crystal ball for Tuesday. We'll have to wait and see,
Many of these voters now are casting ballots with that as one of the primary concerns. So, instead of maybe voting their heart choice -- somebody who is at 5% in the polls -- they might be shifting their voting to make sure they're supporting one of the potential winners,
That changes the math -- one fewer Democrat to split the vote on their side, and on the Republican side, one candidate capturing enough votes to maybe get 25% in the election and ensure a Republican makes the top spot,

Louisiana's new congressional map could allow GOP to pick up seat, erases Black majority district
It could allow the Republicans to flip one of the state's two Democratic-held seats
I think we have a map here that meets all the traditional redistricting criteria. It's not racially gerrymandered.... I think it broadly allows for representation for each region of the state, and it's very fair, and we should approve it,
And now we find ourselves back with a similar map to the one this body passed in 2022, that had five Republican districts and one Democrat district,
Surfer dies at San Francisco's Ocean Beach despite numerous lifesaving efforts
We have a short succession of waves. That means the waves are coming in quickly and they are crashing for a lack of term quickly, so they are extremely large so for pro surfers and semi surfers this is a good spot for them right at the surfline because for the novice individuals this is dangerous,
It's definitely scary it can happen to anyone at any time,
The individuals including that off duty lifeguard form the national park service were able to quickly maneuver through the Surfline and get to this individual and rolling this person over on to a surfboard while they were in that turbulence that you see behind me and getting that individual to the shoreline,

Will eyes replace IDs? New AI tech scans your iris to prove user is human
The device, known as the Orb, was created by Tools for Humanity, a company co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman
Half of all activity on the internet is bot-driven, and that's only going to get worse,
The Orb takes our photo and uses sensors to prove that we are three dimensional human beings,
Unlike your username or password -- or even your Social Security number, which can be changed -- you get one copy of your irises. If your biometric data gets into someone else's hands, that's it. There's no going back,
There is no database that says this is your name, your address, whatever. The app doesn't ask you any of those questions,
I don't think it's avoidable. So, I think you've got to get on the bandwagon,
The Orb is not storing your data. Once it determines you are new to the project, it issues you an ID on your phone, under your control. The photo it took is sent to your phone, and then it destroys its copy,

Trial considers fate of 'girl in the box' kidnapper Cameron Hooker as jurors weigh predator status
Proceedings took place Wednesday in a Redwood City courtroom, where cameras were not allowed
As to Mr. Hooker, he has completed his prison sentence. He was granted parole several years ago. We are trying to extend his commitment to a state hospital. This is a civil commitment, not criminal, because we are alleging that he remains a sexually violent predator to this day, meaning he would be a danger to the community if he were released,
We continue to believe he is a sexually violent predator, is a danger to the community and a danger to any citizen out there because of his sexual deviation,

Victim statements heard in sentencing hearings for Los Gatos mom convicted for teen sex parties
The case, which has spanned years, is nearing its conclusion, but the sentencing phase is expected to take significant time
That will be a very big part of this case. And she has only done that through her statements to the media. But she hasn't addressed the victims directly. And this is just as much an opportunity for her to come forward in court and demonstrate that she gets it,
I think for the court, the fact that she oversaw this and encouraged it and allowed it to go on is going to be a huge factor that she was the adult in the room, and these young victims did not need to suffer,
Xavier Becerra embraces 'competence' message as CA governor's race tightens

Matt Mahan facing campaign questions, political jabs ahead of CA primary
Speaking Monday, just days before the election, Mahan reflected on his motivations for running while honoring those who died in military service
Regardless, that independent expenditure committees are shutting down and are deciding to refund money. That's not good news for the Mahan campaign,
To pull back before that last day of voting is really unusual for a campaign. And it's a sign that folks really just don't think this is going to happen for Matt Mahan,
